With arms water band. That's what they needed. What are you waiting for?
SPEAKER_03Greetings and salutations, and welcome to Hacker Slash. If you're joining us again, welcome back. What the hell are you doing in my closet? If this is your first time listening, welcome to the party. We are a horror movie review podcast dedicated to telling you whether a movie is a hack.
SPEAKER_00A total joke? A waste of time?
SPEAKER_03Or a splash.
SPEAKER_04Totally killer. Pun intended.
SPEAKER_03We believe horror is for everyone, and as such, we're rating these movies with the perspective we've gained from our varying walks of life and the flavors of fear we fancy most. My name is Chris, I'm your friendly neighborhood slasher enthusiast. This week I'm joined by the classic horror connoisseur Sean.
SPEAKER_00It's time for your passage into manhood.
SPEAKER_03And the paranormal paramour, Binx. We gon' get tropical or we gon' get tropical. The people have spoken and our patrons have decided which movie we're covering this week. Now this week's film is the 1998 follow-up to a 4th of July slasher we last covered back in episode 103. We're rewinding that film for our patrons so you can get Binx and Sean's perspective on it. And that was a film that featured a group of teens being hunted down by a hook wielding killer. This week's movie, though, shows us the aftermath of our two heroes trying to move on with their lives. But the past catches up with them and a luxurious island result. This week we're talking about I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
SPEAKER_04This week's film was nominated by Shy, who said it's a sequel we didn't need but got anyway, and adds Brandy to the cast, here for the melodrama and unpacking of trauma.
SPEAKER_03Well let's go ahead and unpack this one. Who's seen it before?
SPEAKER_00I've definitely seen this one before, probably a good handful of times for sure. Not as much as the first one, I feel like. I think the first one is is the one that people remember the most out of the franchise, obviously, but this one I've definitely seen a good handful of times.
SPEAKER_04And I'm the polar opposite. I don't think I've actually ever seen this one. Well, as I was watching it, I was like, nothing comes to mind. I've obviously seen the original several times, but this was my first watch. If I've ever seen this one before, it had to have been small clips when I was very little.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I watched this when I came out in theaters, and I watched it a couple of times after that. But I think what's special about this movie is it came out in this golden age of 90s horror, right before shit went really bad in the early 2000s for me. I look back on this with this fond memory of like, ah, the good old days. We had this, we had the faculty, we had Scream, we had Scream 2, we had Urban Legend. There was some good shit going on in the late 90s. But being having never seen this, what were you expecting?
SPEAKER_04Oh, of course, all the cheesiness in the world, that's for sure, and very little continuity. I expected this movie to make zero sense whatsoever in terms of how the first one goes and how the hell are they gonna keep this going? Definitely a lot more 90s vibes. They're gonna up the ante with the 90s stellar cast, which of course, brandy, that's one hell of a way to do it. But I wasn't ultimately expecting me to enjoy it, if I can be honest, just because I think the first one holds a special place in my heart, and I felt like how much more of the summer are we going to be reliving? Like, how do you keep this whole thing going?
SPEAKER_00Endless summer.
SPEAKER_03Listen, if there's anything we know about it's slashers getting revenge. I think it's a fair expectation to have. It's fair, but man, watching this one again, and looking back on the last time I watched it, it was before I was an adult. I don't think I've actually seen this since I was a teenager. So that is at the very latest, maybe 2008. And it's crazy to watch this now and really take in the quality of the cast, even if this isn't the highest quality performance that they give in their careers. But to look at these stars or people who went on and did so many different things after this, but then also to just look at and really soak in the parallels with Scream 2, there's a lot of comparisons that made it feel super familiar, and that was stuff that I just maybe because it all felt so new back in the 90s, I wasn't paying attention to, it wasn't on my radar at all. But even that, and then the upgrade in Jennifer Lou Hewitt's performance. Big difference.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure. The it just unfortunate that this franchise can't get out of the shadow of Scream and that whole franchise. But I think oddly enough, for me, one of the things that I felt while watching this one was actually fun. And I obviously didn't remember this one being very good, to be honest with you, with just thinking back on it. But I think for as cliche as this plot is, and there's just something somewhat charming, somewhat mildly entertaining about this. I think Shy said it best, it's a sequel we didn't need, but we got, and it ended up being kind of fun.
SPEAKER_04And that's the part where like I can understand when we enter sequel trilogy territory, it's like, all right, this is either gonna be a fun time and a cash grab or a waste of time. We don't really know what we're gonna get sometimes. The fear with this one was that we've talked about Scream, we've got our rewind that we're doing on the original. Kevin Williamson is not attached to this particular project. So to me, it's the continuity of it all and knowing that okay, the first one will allow to be similar to Scream, even when he intentionally tried to not make it similar to Scream, right? In this whole franchise, fair. But this second one really felt like, yeah, now that he's out of the picture, let's make this as scream as possible because that's what's making the bucks. And that's what I couldn't get away from as I was watching this. The title card intro was sick as hell. I thought that there were definitely some moments that were super funny or like very shocking, kills were really great. Like I was entertained, but not an overwhelming amount where I was like, oh, this was worth my time entirely, or like worth having a sequel to, because on the other spectrum of things, I was like, some of these main characters don't make any sense. Like their motives don't make any sense. The way that their acting doesn't add up.
SPEAKER_00Totally does.
SPEAKER_04I think the overall gaslighting that happens, that whole motif, it just gets old after a while, and it's very much like, all right, where's the fun gonna start? So I think that that's where I was like, okay, it's dragging a bit. Very on the fence with this one. Very on the fence.
SPEAKER_00It's unfortunate because Kevin Williamson was literally writing everything else at this time.
SPEAKER_04Everything else.
SPEAKER_00This motherfucker was literally writing Dawson's Creek, the faculty, Halloween H2O. He was directing a movie a year later, and he just couldn't be bothered to write this sequel or Scream 3.
SPEAKER_04No, and if and you know what? Have we paid the price for it? You know what I'm saying? Like, do we see what happens when he doesn't touch these things? Because ultimately, what when he does, it's gold. It's gold, it's fantastic. And then it's also said that this wasn't gold, but man, you you definitely can tell it doesn't have that that je ne sais quoi, you know?
SPEAKER_03It was gold plated, wasn't it? It was. It's fake, uncut gems. Hey, my friend, I have a special deal for you. I can knock it down to 20 bucks. Even then, I still had fun with this movie. I think what stands out to me and obviously we had this so closely related to Scream, and it's the Kevin Williamson of it all, but there's something about the tone in the beginning of this movie, in particular Julie, and how she has changed from the first film and what she's living with now. It feels very different from Scream. She doesn't give Sidney Prescott, and this movie needed a final girl to anchor herself in her own identity to step out of that shadow. So I was surprised, honestly, how much better of a time I had with her because I was kind of half in, half out with her in the previous movie. I mean, I thought Sarah Michelle Geller should have been the final girl in I Know What You Did Last Summer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But I feel like she really came back with a vengeance in this one, and I really loved that. I think that it it's interesting to see how her and Ray's relationship evolves from the previous film. And looking at where they start and where things end, I thought it was a good time.
SPEAKER_00It is true that you bring up like Sarah Michelle Geller probably felt like she should have been the final girl in the first one, but definitely it changed the direction of her dynamic in this one, which was definitely good to see it needed to happen, obviously. So I definitely get you there. I was actually surprised because I forgot Jack Black was in this movie. Like I was completely surprised to see his fucking dumbass pop up as the dreadlock stoner. It was like as soon as I saw him, I didn't even see his face. As soon as I saw the dreadlock body floating around, I was like, that's fucking Jack Black, isn't it? And sure enough, this motherfucker.
SPEAKER_03Biggest disappointment of the movie. I'm already not a Jack Black fan, Peter.
SPEAKER_00Come on.
SPEAKER_03And to see him with dreads, even worse. Even worse. What the?
SPEAKER_00He's such a nice he's such a good guy.
SPEAKER_04No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I will not allow it. I won't allow it. Not in this house.
SPEAKER_03Darling, it's happening.
SPEAKER_04In this house, we ride the Jack Black train literally with our flags and like parading like the Florida Panthers. I don't have words. That is the biggest surprise. That's how I know I hadn't seen this movie. Because when I saw even his build, it's like you said, Sean, I didn't even have to when I saw his build, I was like, no fucking way. And then I heard the voice and I lost my mind.
SPEAKER_02So good.
SPEAKER_04I paused the movie. I was like, no, no, this can't be. No way. He's in the movie. I fact-checked myself. I was so excited. That changed the whole fucking movie for me. Everything. Couldn't believe it. I did have another surprise though. It's actually more of a sad one. Bill Cobbs literally just passed away a few days ago from like today. And he's in this movie. So when I saw his face, I was like, oh wow, that's kind of eerie a little bit because literally just passed away. Pretty big actor, you know, especially in his earlier days in his career. And so to see him in this film, you don't necessarily know what kind of character he's gonna play yet. You just felt like, oh wow, that's kind of odd timing. But in general, though, the the cast is a surprise, obviously, and it's heavy hitters, but Jack Black took the cake without a doubt.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. My only disappointment really in this movie, I think, is it just comes down to the plot holes. It really just comes down to, I don't know, how ridiculous. Maybe it's not even plot holes, and maybe it's just how ridiculous the plot actually is. And I know that's kind of like the fun of it, but I think there are just some things that stick out like a sore thumb that just are like, come on, and then there's some things that are just like way on the nose. And I think they could have been a little bit more clever and still had a good time, but my only gripe.
SPEAKER_04And this is where I'm like, they were trying so hard to be like Scream when the whole point was for them to not be like Scream. Right. I think a lot of the plot parallels to the way that Scream goes about their plot twists and and whatnot. It's so similar. So I'm watching this film and I'm like, oh, I could have seen this a mile away. How did anyone not see this? I don't care if it was 1998 or 97. You could have literally seen this coming. It's no surprise.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I can't wait to unpack that specific bit in the spoiler zone because it is the other side of the coin of a Scream 2 tactic. And really, I think the predictability of that is what takes the bite completely out of this movie. And again, though, it's I still know what you did last summer. I know what you did last summer isn't very scary. It's just a fun time. It's just a teen slasher. So there isn't really a lot here to sink in on with, you know, am I gonna watch this movie with a friend to get them scared? This is pop some popcorn, kick back on the 4th of July, and just watch something a little festive. That's really all this can possibly do for me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's what this movie is. I mean, it's just supposed to be a fun teenage slasher. It's not, I don't think, supposed to be taken super seriously. It is riddled in traditional jump scares, so this is one that you can arguably sit on the couch with your partner or whoever, make some popcorn, turn the lights off, enjoy the ride. I'm sure that, you know, I'm not saying it's a great ride, not saying it's a fantastic ride, but your nerves might get spiked once or twice, these types of typical jump scares. If you're someone that does, you know, react to things like that, especially loud noises and whatnot. So it's got those. If you're looking for that experience, it's got those matched with the you made a bad choice cliche decisions.
SPEAKER_04For sure. And definitely bloodier, I would say. Oh yeah. Whereas the first one, I think the point was to not actually show any blood or really incorporate that much gore or any gore at all. Again, they are the full 180, the whole pendulum swings the other way where it's like bloodier for sure, full on in your face. So even if you enjoy that kind of stuff too, and the jump scares for me weren't as effective, maybe because I did do these films back to back. I watched the first one, then I watched the second. So maybe I was already vigilant. But if you go into this blindly or are looking for a jump scare galore type situation that isn't like James Wani, you know, I think some might get you. This is definitely the one for you. And that's where I would say there's a lot of homages to Scream, right? We keep talking about this. So we've got even the smallest of Easter eggs, I feel like, that are alluring to Scream just a little bit, or maybe just the slasher genre in general. Maybe I I thought of it to be a little bit blatant, but it actually wasn't. With that in mind, and how much we've already referenced how similar this is to Scream, how original can it really be? It's unfortunate because it it takes what you could argue is a little bit original in terms of this urban legend, and it just extrapolates that and just adapts all of these typical tropes and things, and then uses a radio contest to kind of help move the story along. It just feels odd, it feels strange.
SPEAKER_03It feels very 90s though, and you know what? I'm not mad at it because you know what they did? They said we're not gonna stop at Scream 2 and taking these kids to college, we're gonna go jaws the revenge and take these motherfuckers to the Bahamas. And you know what? Kudos to them. The difference here is the setting of the movie, and it doesn't make it completely original, it doesn't make it the best thing since sliced bread by any means, but it does add just enough character to this movie to give it a level of charm I think it needs for it to have any pride in itself.
SPEAKER_00It does, it does. The setting was an interesting change of pace or scenery or whatever, but overall, this is your average run-of-the-mill slasher. You're not really gonna see anything too different here. I I feel like you're just going to get the same old formula, insert characters in strange plot here. So, yeah, like it has its charm to it for sure. It has some things that I think separate itself especially from its predecessor, but it is a very generic type of formula when you think of like slashers and whatnot. I will tell you, I think the ending was fun. I think it played off of what the first one did and made it a little bit more drawn out and fun. This is like the very, very end.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'd agree. I I'd say that it's fun in the sense that we're getting a little bit more action to it. For me, though, I struggle with it because like how much am I gonna allow that to slide though? Because although it's entertaining and we do have the ending for as long as we do, and there's a lot of action, there's a lot of like, okay, what's gonna happen next in terms of consequences? But the plot twist itself, I knew from the first 20 minutes.
SPEAKER_00I feel like of course, right?
SPEAKER_04And and it's just so predictable and an eye roll that for me I couldn't get past it. And even when they tried to trick you, it was such a shitty trick. It was like, oh, don't even bother with the red herring, don't even bother. So I just felt like I'm here watching this ending to see how this all concludes, but yet somehow, even at the very final bit of it, I'm like, the believability is also kind of just hard for me to it when every guy tossed out the window at that point. No, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like I just don't even know why I'm still watching this. Like they really want to keep going. It was giving, honest to God, it was giving like Friday the 13th type stuff. And we know how I feel about there being 25 billion of those movies. It was like the early seed, like a little seed waiting to hatch in terms of where are we gonna keep this going? How in the world are you gonna keep this franchise going? And I wasn't here for it.
SPEAKER_03I do wonder if 1998 Binx would have felt the same way.
SPEAKER_041998 Binks is six years old. I would have definitely been like Exactly I just really like Freddie Pritch Jr.
SPEAKER_03Okay, maybe 2001 Binx, maybe. I I I don't know. I think this is a movie that for the modern obvious, it's absolutely predictable. I think what's more frustrating about it though is how copy and paste it really is. And that's all I'll say there. I can't wait to unpack it in the spoiler zone. But it was another one of those moments where if I was walking on ice in this movie, the ending would have been exactly where I slipped. Jack Black's dreads and the ending. That would have been my slip points.
SPEAKER_04Slanderous.
SPEAKER_03It's not slander, it's just honest feedback. That's all it is. But we'll see how all of these mixed feelings shake out into a rating. Now, before we divulge there, Sean, how would you describe the gore score?
SPEAKER_00Well, this sequel definitely gives you more in terms of kills and overall gore than the first film did, so we'll give it that for sure. But not even this killer could hook anything higher than a medium to medium low gore score. So this one we'll give it a medium just because it had more kills and more gore that was more than its predecessor.
SPEAKER_04And what about the animal report? This summer was safe from any animal casualties.
SPEAKER_03Well, let's go ahead and get into our ratings then. I still know what you did last summer as voted and selected by our patrons. Was it a hackerslash?
SPEAKER_04This film unfortunately does not have the same effect as its predecessor, which is shocking considering they tried to up the antics with more gore, but ultimately the plot itself, to me, was flat and unnecessary and just unrealistic on all accounts. And I know that that's very late 90s. And I know, like we shared earlier, sometimes we get a sequel that we just don't need, but at least it's fun. And yes, there were definitely some fun moments that I enjoyed. But a majority of it though felt a little, I guess maybe forgettable is the word, or in the sense that it just didn't really resonate that made me want to re-watch this or made me want to talk about this film outside of wanting to highlight the fact that Brandy is in this movie, despite her characters' friendship motives being a little hazy, and obviously Jack Black's cameo. So to me, this is just the evidence of what a cash grab looks like in the late 90s, and one that I personally would not actually enter in any contest to re-watch. So I'm gonna have to give this one a hack.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, I think this one is tough because one could easily argue that this film suffers from an unoriginal plot that feels illogical at times, and the characters are your typical cliche horror characters with some not always great acting. One could also argue that this is just fun. It's mildly entertaining. It's a slasher filled with just about everything you would expect in a movie like this. And I've been on this kick lately of just having fun with movies, but I promise I'll tell you when a movie really is bad and deserves a total hack because there are movies out there, but is this movie really a total hack? Is it a total joke? I don't know. I think this movie sets up a fairly successful sequel. I think it brings back our beloved survivors for from the first film, adding some fun new ones to the mix. It's dropping them in the Bahamas in the middle of a tropical storm on a remote island, setting up the perfect scenario for a film like this to take place. And I think it's filled with bad acting, matched with poor choices, the same old jump scares, but with more legitimate on-screen kills. And overall, you could technically find reasons to swing in either direction with this film. But I'm not feeling super picky these days for some reason, and I did honestly find this one to be entertaining despite its flaws. So some would say it even hooked me. It's a slash.
SPEAKER_03Here's the thing I want to really go back to that original nomination, and Sean quoted it earlier. The nomination said this is a sequel we didn't need, but it this movie actually is better than it has any right to be. This had the potential to be complete horseshit. Let's be real. And you know, classic Chris Rojas falling in love with potential. I found it to be a fun, easy time. And yeah, there are missteps along the way. It lacks the Kevin Williamson wit. We know that, but it still manages to be effective and serviceable. And honestly, for me, it does just enough to be an easy, breezy summer slash. And with that, I still know what you did last summer from 1998 as her one hack and two slashes. Now you can find this movie available online. Cough cough, you might find it for free on YouTube, or you can check the link in our show to see where you can find it right now. Check it out, then join us in the second half. We can unpack all these horrors together. We'll see you in a bit.

So grab your popcorn, lock the doors just in case, and join us as we watch the drama unfold. Death Island, because sometimes the scariest movies aren't in theaters, they're on an island paradise.
SPEAKER_03See you there, horror fans Welcome back folks, you're now entering the spoiler zone for I Still Know What You Did last summer when just earned one hack and two slashes. Now we have a lot to unpack here but before we get into the specifics of our ratings let's go through those kills.
SPEAKER_00Well we definitely have a slight improvement in terms of actual kills in this one because we get a total of 10 kills. The problem is we don't get much from them. I still find myself wishing I got more from these kills especially out of an R-rated movie. We do get a little bit more but I just don't think it it really goes the way that I want it to do and just give me more of that kill. Either way, I think there are still some fun ones to get into so let's talk about and which one of these kills slashed into your hearts.
SPEAKER_03I absolutely loved our very first kill of the film which was Dave getting hooked through the mouth and then extracted from the vehicle. This is the kind of kill I wanted to see this is what I needed to see.
SPEAKER_04Your fisherman hook hand is coming back for a sequel this is the kind of shit it is a pretty brutal kill for sure to not only be hooked through the mouth but ripped out of the truck as well not fun. And then for your friend to just witness it too is also pretty unsettling. The whole scenario was pretty impressive. For sure that's like a good tone set in terms of kills where I then felt like oh shit this is like pretty brutal and then what else are we gonna see? And then it's like a spiral of like blood quite literally in a lot of it.
SPEAKER_03For sure and I think it reminds me of two things and it doesn't really deserve this comparison but the Kevin Bacon kill in Friday the 13th where the Achete's going through the throat and through the neck while he's laying in bed.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03That one in particular and then just the idea of hooks in general I know that I should look to this movie's whole fucking predecessor to think back on the and those kills and say wow it's very reminiscent of that. But I'm thinking about Texas Chainsaw Massacre and people getting hung on meat hooks.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_03And I think about the visceral pain that I feel in my body just imagining that this kill is the first one in this franchise to really give me that feeling I feel like we missed an opportunity for like a really good fish hook you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Like a really good fish hook just to see somebody get yanked that way maybe rip piece of their face off right that's not even like the actual what thing that killed you but that's like the beginning of what killed you we missed an opportunity there I'm telling you.
SPEAKER_03Well Nathan shared earlier that I know what she did last summer is getting a direct sequel that's going to release in 2025. So maybe that's when it is so some tea on that though.
SPEAKER_04I hope that it's true. I really do they apparently released a date just to get people excited but nor Jennifer Love Hewitt or Freddie Prince Jr. have been approached to sign any contracts to do anything to be on board with this film. Apparently Freddie Prince Jr had lunch with the director but to talk about the idea and they were like okay about it but there's no actual anything in writing so he himself said that studio is just putting out these little nuggets of information and putting out a date when there's actually nothing little feelers.
SPEAKER_03Yeah feelers when there's actually nothing set in stone stipping their toes in the water see what the temperature's like listen is that some bullshit maybe but also that's exactly how we got the entire Friday the 13th franchise that motherfucker just wrote Friday the 13th and it's gonna be the scariest picture you've ever seen in a fucking newspaper and then boom now we have Jason Voorhees. So maybe it'll work.
SPEAKER_04Maybe it'll work no absolutely I don't doubt that at all and I think that in truth it's a good way to kind of see if there's anybody even interested so I'm not true negating the the tactic here. What I am saying though is that we don't really know if it's gonna happen or not but if it does yeah let's start to put out the same feelers back in terms of let's get that fish hook you know what I'm saying let's do XYZ yeah make a red herring that actually makes sense all of these things.
SPEAKER_00Look at them literally giving us bait I would be curious though because let's say this comes out right let's say that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prince Jr. do sign on and now they're in their respective roles and what caliber I don't know because the interesting thing about how that dynamic is going to work is that we have this honorable mention for kills. It's not part of the kill count because nothing is actually set in stone and nothing is confirmed but at the very end of the credits of this film you can hear the sound of a hook slashing through flesh and Ben Willis laughing and we know that the last thing we saw is Julie getting carried under the bed and Ray is in the bathroom so do we think one of them or both of them died and that was the intention you know that whole thing.
SPEAKER_03Well there's a lot of fucking intentions and that's why this ending of this movie is bullshit just like the ending in the previous movie. I'm glad that they reduced the ending in the previous movie to a nightmare in this movie.
SPEAKER_04I think that was a really elegant solution those motherfuckers didn't die no Ben and Will Benson Ben son Will is Ben sons yeah it is fucking ha clever see what you did there buddy they're fucking dead nah not doing that shit not fucking don't don't no we're not doing this shit how you gonna shoot that person eight times and tell me that person is back get the fuck out of here I mean Michael's done it Michael's done it though. No but this ain't Michael Myers dog I know I'm just saying people've done it. People have done it it's just crazy it's crazy it's crazy fine you want to tell me that you never found the body so perhaps you know this guy's alive? Okay. But how old is this man? Let's start there. He got hit by a car and he survived that all kinds of shenanigans and he survived that is this guy immortal? I I don't even know I fall and I already maybe he was on PCP. Maybe he has to be a hundred percent he's Florida man because he can withstand all kinds of things it's just I won't take it if they bring this guy back I'm going to lose my mind truthfully because there's not even a supernatural element to it at this point. It's established that he's an actual functioning human being with his Ben son okay I I won't take it however the part that was like very scream to me was the double tap of it all because in the first one it's obviously apparent that they don't double tap and in the second one they're like make sure that you're fucking dead and they do that last line and just lose it shooting him and I'm like oh yeah you learned that from scream.
SPEAKER_03I hope you did yeah they absolutely learned it from scream but I can at least acknowledge that while sure Ben got his double tap I think it's fucked up particularly that Will died by his father's hand.
SPEAKER_00Yeah I love that that was good by accident was really good.
SPEAKER_04Fucked up for sure absolutely worth it absolutely is that what he deserved of course I'm glad you're gonna you're gonna tell me that your last name is Ben Son and you have the audacity to be like get it Ben Son bruh sir I'm glad that your father just like knifed you or hooked you or whatever. Unacceptable another laugh though that in terms of kills because that wasn't necessarily funny the Benson part was but a kill that made me laugh was of course Jack Black's death.
SPEAKER_00Of course of course it was a great moment have you seen anything more Jack Black no no it's just the look he has when he looks up to find this dude standing in front of him and getting stabbed or hooked in the hand or whatever amazing it was honestly probably cinematic gold. I like the shears going through his chest see that was good. Give me some more give me more of that kind of stuff I want to see more of it. That's great.
SPEAKER_04He should have opened the shears up inside afterwards you know what I mean I agree but I don't think we can be greedy because ultimately we didn't get a damn thing in the first one so I'm surprised that we got anything at all in the second one.
SPEAKER_03I know I know I think we can be greedy because we had a shears kill in the burning in the 80s. I think they could have fucking really just ripped a page out of that book. They could have we also had that in the Friday the 13th where it's not really Jason Voorhees.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03The other Friday the 13th where it's not really Jason Voorhees the second time that happened that's the second time they pulled that shit on us yeah I also liked Mr.
SPEAKER_00Brooks I think we didn't even get to see it but I loved what we got to see afterwards with the machete sticking out of his forehead and the blood everywhere it was just a great shot. So I do love to throw that in there as a favorite kill as well.
SPEAKER_04Yeah especially since he was an asshole.
SPEAKER_03He was he foreshadowed Tyrell's death literally I'm outlive you oh terrible but also Tyrell's death coming at the end of a monologue talking about how he's hungry and he's that was so perfect.
SPEAKER_00That was good.
SPEAKER_04I mean he kind of foreshadowed his own and Tyrell's death he just foreshadowed the order of things there were a lot of kills and we actually already kind of alluded to this a little bit in terms of what we see and what we wished we had seen more of and all of that. I think my favorite production element just in general though is the fact that we can see something actually like we see special effects you know we see practical effects specifically in action this time versus in the first one we don't get that ability because the goal was not to incorporate a lot of blood or any of that in the in that particular slasher like in this one obviously it's again that pendulum swing that I was talking about so we see like these frozen body parts and these bodies and oh all kinds of I don't know positions and they're all on top of each other and they're bloody and they're like machete. I don't know I thought it was pretty cool. I thought it was really nice to see because I wasn't anticipating it at all considering how I almost want to say stale the first one is in terms of its scorescore, right? But Sean, I'll let you decide that one.
SPEAKER_00No, it's totally fair. They definitely stepped it up a little bit obviously for this movie. It's still not anything crazy or drastic but you definitely get more in terms of sheer volume you get a little bit more in terms of visual effects and some practical effects and I also enjoyed the practical effects quite a bit. I think outside of that though it's probably just the setting because I thought it was interesting and fun. Yeah I know I'm trying to pull for some things here and we're probably all gonna align on a lot of this stuff but yeah the whole like perfect storm quite literally and figuratively right just played into the movie and that part of the story I think was kind of fun even though some of the things that happened around the story don't make sense. I did like the drop of the whole tropical storm on a remote island.
SPEAKER_03I really love it because I think it scratches an itch for me in horror that I have growing up in Miami and spending summers in Puerto Rico. It feels like this really relatable energy and I think maybe that's why I also like Jaws of Revenge so much. Yeah it's not a great fucking movie but you put it in a tropical setting and it's suddenly different from all the Midwest bullshit that we get. This isn't cornfields it's not a friendly little suburb in Illinois. This is something a little bit more familiar and think about the tropical location that it's often associated with relaxation or just general peace or merriment. Now it's a vacant ghost town because it's the off season also these motherfuckers are dealing with a hurricane that they've never had to contend with before at least some of these folks in this movie. And I absolutely love that change of pace. It's not something that I would have ever had on the bingo card for us I know what you did last summer sequel. I did not see a trip to the Bahamas there. And I do think it's a little ridiculous how we get there. This is really elaborate. I feel like they could have worked a lot less hard to make these kills happen stateside. They didn't have to do all this. Think about how much debt this estate isn't gonna be in yeah I actually want to go back into my favorite scene because I just spoke a second ago about how these places are always associated with merriment and just good vibes in general. This is gonna be a really cheeky little thing but it's when they're singing karaoke and I have one specific reason why I loved this. It's because even with Jennifer Love You It singing terribly to I Will Survive one of my favorite songs this moment was still better for me than this fucking guy singing I think I love you in Scream 2. Oh the secondhand cringe of that scene fucking still gets me to this day and I just looked at this movie and I thought you know what this is a way better way to do this. Thank you so much. Love that but also how quickly she shifts in the beginning of the movie we see her changed. She's having a nightmare she's acknowledging what she did and the fact that her friends are no longer around we see her holding on so tightly to the pain of the last year. And she's not healed yet she's nowhere near healed. But then we have her finally letting her guard down a little bit having some fun really letting herself come out letting her personality come out but then the second she sees those words on the screen it's again that upgraded performance from Jennifer Love Hewitt. I absolutely love that moment.
SPEAKER_04Yes it is definitely a great moment in particular to talk about Julie's PTSD and like the effects of what just happened a year ago that to me I really fucking struggled with this film because it's like bruh did this happen a year ago or did this happen five years ago? Sometimes it felt like it happened five years ago and they were completely fine in particular Julie and Ray. Other times it was like okay no this was definitely something that happened more recently she can't even go back to her you know hometown. It was very back and forth in terms of okay what is happening to them this is pretty still fresh and pretty major two of their best friends passed away brutally murdered it was very odd but that scene in particular felt more grounded in reality to me than other scenes. For example, one that definitely wasn't grounded in reality what it was grounded in was a cash grab and that was her recreating the what are you waiting for scene. Oh yeah I couldn't help but laugh my ass off. It is my favorite scene for the simple fact of how outlandish it is for them to have the audacity to bring that back again and really think that it would land.
SPEAKER_03It's just how dare they're anything Julie does is throw her arms wide open in the rain to be upset about something and ask what they're waiting for.
SPEAKER_00What they needed to do was play creed they needed to creed that scene up they needed to creed that scene up with arms waddle bam that's what they needed what are you waiting for terrible oh my gosh put me in the writer's room for the remake. I've got a couple things that come to mind on a serious note the the scene where Julie is in her room or whatever and is being stalked in the room so to speak and you've got like her moving up and her face is getting closer to the camera and you get that shot of her walking towards the screen and the blurry like silhouette of the what looks to be the killer behind the glass door. There's just a lot of really great cinematography and shots in that scene. I thought that was probably one of the more well played out scenes in the movie that I think really just felt like a good slasher like I was watching a good suspenseful kind of movie.
SPEAKER_04And then there was one scene in particular it's when Ray is sailing the fucking boat to the remote island somehow during a tropical storm on his own and it's like some bullshit out of something like Gilligan's Island and all I'm hearing is just sit right back and you hear a tale a tale of a fateful trip and I'm like what is this fucking idiot doing dude what is this guy doing uh that was the best moment oh man put us both in the writer's room okay I'm hearing some great comedy I'm hearing people losing their minds they that's a universal slash that's a fucking universal slash no it's giving ginger dead man slash for you no it's giving comedy it's giving all of the things no but in all seriousness Ray bro how do you go and operate a frickin' boat on your own I just don't understand all beat up all beat up in a tropical storm well he's a fisherman he's aquatic oh yeah okay all right okay fine it's just this movie was so out of place in terms of like why do we even have Ray if a majority of the time I forgot this man's fending himself you know he's off on his own like this is the last voyage of the Demeter he's just on his own he's on his own on his own by the time he finally gets there I think he does like one thing mind you let's talk about how he is the epitome of men cannot be fucking bothered to put their woman first he had the audacity to feel like oh I'm gonna buy her a ring and I'm gonna propose but on my terms I'm not gonna go to the Bahamas. Yeah not gonna take the free trip to the Bahamas when he's got a ring in his pocket what better place instead it yeah instead we're gonna I was gonna propose in our hometown where everyone was massacred.
SPEAKER_03Yippee Yeah where our friends died it's not his finest moment but also these fuckers uh yeah appearance aside in the story are like 19 years old which is crazy right it's high school sweethearts trying to get married right out of high school so you know that shit is doomed to begin with however combo the thing about Ray and Julie is that hurt people hurt people and they are two good people who are dealing with some absolutely horrific shit and not responding super well but at least this is an example of someone who I think his heart is in the right place. He's just maturing as an adult she's also maturing as an adult and it's like how does your relationship survive something like that. And I think that's what was really interesting when we start the movie we see where she is she talks about how she didn't want to go home. These are things that I think take a lot of vulnerability to acknowledge and speak about with someone and then for them to be in two different places and how they're navigating that experience how they're processing that experience whenever there's a misalignment there that's gotta be so hard. And it's one of those things where he was internalizing and projecting her fear into making it about himself and that was probably also because of the his guilt his pain from that whole year. Ray and Julie are a really interesting case study.
SPEAKER_00Yeah he is a fucking clown but at least he came through at least he showed up what I do like about this one is that right out of the gate we get Ray being stalked by the killer. Obviously in the first one he's not stalked at all like he doesn't really have to deal with shit until the end because the killer's trying to pin everything on him at that one right here at least we know we're going straight for you buddy it's no holds barred now.
SPEAKER_04I do like the fact that in the end they are together they're happy it seems like that's the chemistry that I wanted to see more of in this sequel between Ray and Julie that obviously we didn't have and I understand that it's because you need to set up will and whatever being this new love interest the fact that he's a red herring briefly but then isn't and then obviously is our killer all of that. But I just felt like in the first film obviously we have this conclusion of them relying on each other. They're the only ones that survived this thing. So I went into the second one anticipating that maybe we would just see more of them going through this PTSD together but instead we just see them dealing with that separately and then Ray at very much at the beginning because they go straight for him and the rest of it just him floating off literally in the ocean where Julie is like our main character that we're seeing go through all of this gaslit ninety nine percent of the time obviously because that's how this trope goes every single time especially in a slasher. I don't know I just felt like what can I expect in the late nineties I'm not gonna expect them to be, you know, trying something new about it. It's very much a blueprint that we have to see through. But I think that she is a very interesting character that evolves nonetheless. I think she grows a lot more self-awareness in this film. I think she grows to be like way more, I guess, secure of herself, especially towards the end. Like that power is there. She's very aware of her surroundings even more. So despite the hiccups even at the beginning, where I was questioning, like, girl, how are you not gonna know that your boyfriend's trying to like propose to you? How are you also just gonna go to the Bahamas without him? Like you don't give a fuck. That's those are some choices that I certainly would not make, even if I was 19, but whatever. Towards the end, it seemed like, okay, this is the same Julie that like had hard eyes for Ray.
SPEAKER_03I think what was really tough to see was just how easily she was swayed against Ray from her college friend who is now her best friend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You've known this girl for less than a year for sure, because you this all this shit went down last summer and then you started college. So for the few months, this girl has been your best friend. And honestly, she can't relate to your entire fucking situation.
SPEAKER_00Not at all.
SPEAKER_04Not only can she not relate to this entire situation, this is the part where I'm like, Carla, sweetie, let's talk about your motives real quick. Because it's something's not the math isn't mathing entirely. You barely know her. You are pushing this guy, Will. Like if he's the one, like he's the perfect person. My man's extremely anxious all the time, a little bit disrespectful, obviously, just weird in general. It's a very like something sus, I can see it, everyone can see it. You should see it. There's no way that she would just be pushing that kind of white man onto this girl or any or hanging around him, that's for damn sure. I I just feel like Will Benson was just oozing this like creepy guy energy from the very beginning that it then made it so difficult for me to believe that Carla would kind of prop him up as like a great contender to replace this girl's boyfriend. It's not even like they broke up or anything. No, they they're still dating actively, they're still together in present day, and you're trying to sell her on this other weird guy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. This is the example of a friend who you don't fully tell everything to about your partner because they will overreact and take the smallest fucking thing way too seriously, and then all of a sudden your partner is dead to them, even though they're a great person. Yeah, like this is exactly that situation. Now, Brandy in her performance loved her, she was very lovable as Carla, but Carla's influence on Julian Ray's relationship was not something that I was about.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You know what I like though about Julie? One last thing with her is that this trauma, right? Obviously, we know how she's like super traumatized from the events that happened before this film and whatnot, but then she's also somehow kind of ready. You know what I mean? There's this moment where she pulls this knife out of her nightstand table. She just gets up and pulls this knife like she's ready to fucking go. So there's this trauma, there's this anxiousness, there's this I'm scared of this happening again kind of thing, but then there's also this side to her that she's been through this and I'm not gonna let it happen again, and I'm ready. And it's kind of like channeling her inner Lori Strode. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_04For sure. She was prepped and ready to go, which is funny that you bring that scene up in particular because to me it was like, so then Carla, girl, you know that your friend, your roommate, has gone through something insanely like traumatic and would prompt her to do something reactive if she heard some odd noises in the middle of the night. So why are you looking through her closet with all the lights off? Why would you not announce yourself, psychopath? What are you doing, girl? To be fair, she did not think she was home.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's what she said.
SPEAKER_04So okay, so when you think that someone's not home, you still are perusing through their closet, all the lights are off, breaking in.
SPEAKER_00A little breaking and entering, you know? You had a nice outfit for the night.
SPEAKER_04A little B E.
SPEAKER_00A little B E on the Friday night.
SPEAKER_03Something light. You know, you talk about Julie and Carla. I want to tell you what I think my worst part of this fucking movie is. It is the final destination tanning bed moment. Except these motherfuckers are on the outside of the tanning bed and they couldn't just think to cut the fucking zip ties. They had to go look for a whole ass object to break the fucking tanning bed. It's plastic, guys. Scissors, knife, anything remotely sharp.
SPEAKER_00That's true.
SPEAKER_04Zip ties with a kryptonite, apparently. In this film, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, those are hard to break through back in the day, you know.
SPEAKER_04Made of steel.
SPEAKER_00Kevin Williamson not writing this screenplay is the worst part. So, Kevin, if you're out there, I don't want to wait for our lives to be over. I want you to write down the fucking screenplay. Incredible. It's either that or the plot that somehow doesn't make sense, but works at the same time. It it's just the whole play on the family dynamic and how they got there and the whole bullshit. It was just so wild and outrageous. And you know, maybe it's part of the charm of the movie, who knows by now. But it's either Kevin Williamson not writing the screenplay for this or just the plot, and it all kind of fucking ties together. So there's that.
SPEAKER_04Look, I originally had the best part being Jack Black and Brandy, but now the best part was that, Sean, was you singing that. The Dawson's Creek situation. That was incredible. That's the best part of this movie. It didn't even happen in the movie, but it's the best part of this episode, and thus the movie.
SPEAKER_03Listen, Sean, your singing may have been the best part for Banks, but I'll have to admit, I wasn't planning on watching this again until you started singing that. Because now I'm like, fuck, man, maybe. Maybe. No, no, no. Now that's gonna be forever linked with a little bit of charm into this movie for me.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. Look, it unless unless it has creed in a remake of a m of the sequel or anything like that, I don't think I'm gonna be re-watching this one again. I just don't think it adds any value, really. I don't think that I need to continue further. I've got the first one, the first one's great, and we're gonna leave it at that. I know that there's so many variations of this. There's like another sequel that's unrelated. Yeah. There's the more recent remake. I think they did a show, actually, is what it was.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there was a TV series.
SPEAKER_04Right. So, like, there's so many different adaptations and things, and perhaps if I had the occasional time, whatever, I'll check it out one day. But I don't think there's like an incessant need to revisit this one nor continue further. Not even for Jack Black, and that was quite a surprise.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know overall these movies I think are just still fun to watch. I wouldn't watch them as often as, say, like Halloween or even Nightmare in Elm Street and things like that in like the slasher franchise, but I think that these definitely have rewatch value. I think they're fun enough to be able to at least watch these first two. I I know what you did last summer, and I still know what you did last summer at some point over the years to come. So I'm sure they'll circle back around somehow.
SPEAKER_03Well, we'll see when that circles around, but for now, there you have it, folks. I still know what you did last summer from 1998, has selected by our patrons, has earned one hack and two sloshes. We certainly had a robust discussion here, but the conversation doesn't end here by any means.
SPEAKER_04We want to know what you think. Would you revisit this film? Would you guess the ending in this terrible red herring? Let us know either way. You can join in on the conversation by hanging out with us for free in our Discord. Click the link in our show notes to sign up.
